1p, measuring 7.25" x 5", Litchfield, Connecticut, dated April 2, 1782. A legal document examined and signed "Oliver Wolcott Judge", concerning a confiscated estate's sale. Reading in full: "It appearing to this court that the confiscated Estate of John Joy is insolvent, Abraham Bradley Esq., Administrator on said Estate is thereupon directed to sell the whole of said Estate either at publick [sic] venue or private sale as to him it shall appear will be most for the Benefit of the creditor of said Estate and make the Return of his Doings therein to this court." With docketing on verso, recording the estate as including 53 acres and 53 Pounds of lawful money. With flattened folds, toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Minor bleed through from docketing on verso. Mounting residue on verso. Large and bold signature. Together with an engraved portrait of Wolcott, measuring 5.25" x 8.5", by J. Longacre.

Oliver Wolcott (1726-1797) was born in Connecticut to colonial governor Roger Wolcott and his wife. He graduated from Yale College at the top of his class in 1747 before joining a company of New York militia in the French and Indian War. Following his war service, he studied and practiced medicine with his brother in northwestern Connecticut and later moved to Litchfield where he became a merchant and served as sheriff of Litchfield County from 1751 to 1771. As a delegate from Connecticut, he signed the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. During the Revolutionary War, he was placed in command of all Connecticut militia regiments in New York as a brigadier general, fought in the Battle of Saratoga, commanded militia as a Major General in defending the coast against raids by British General William Tryon, and served as a commissioner of Indian affairs. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1786 to 1796 and as Governor of Connecticut from January 1796 to his death in December 1797.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
