Autograph Document Signed “J. Winslow,” 1p, 7.75” x 4.75”. Fort Lawrence [Nova Scotia], December 10, 1755. Folds. Professionally mounted on heavier paper of the same size. Fine condition.

 

In full:

“Fort Lawrence 10th December 1755. Then Received of Capt. Nathaniel Perry, the Sum of Twenty One Pounds Eighteen Shilling & Eight Pence half penny, Lawfull Money of the Massachusetts Bay. On Account of Thomas Hancock Esqr. Merchant in Boston. £21..18..8½ .”

 

In 1754, Thomas Hancock hired as a clerk, his 17-year-old nephew John who had just graduated from Harvard. In 1763, John became a full partner in his uncle’s shipping business. When Thomas Hancock died in 1764, John Hancock inherited the business and his uncle’s estate, becoming one of the wealthiest men in the colonies. In 1776, he was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

 

Nathaniel Perry (1713-1756) was commissioned a Captain in the militia under Colonel John Winslow in 1742. On November 6, 1754, he had a company of 46 enlisted men and the next month received a warrant for further enlistments. On May 29, 1755, he raised a company of 96 men (2nd battalion, Governor Shirley’s Regiment) for “removing the French encroachments from His Majesty’s Government in Nova Scotia.” Capt. Perry was 44 when he died of illness At Fort Cumberland on June 17, 1756.

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
