George Read poses a series of questions regarding the property rights of land once owned by Robert Hutchinson and passed down to his daughter Mary Williams, who apparently sold it to John Richardson.

Make the following Inquiries

1.   for the Title deeds to Robt Hutchinson, for this Land.

2    how many Children Robt Hutchinson left at his death, their names & with whom they married.

3    If Mary Williams who is said to be one of the Daurs was a widow at the time of releasing her right to John Richardson

4    If Thos David one of the Witnesses to the Deed by Mary Williams be dead or alive.

5    how many Children John Richardson had by Hannah his wife & were living at her death, & whether any of them left Children or made wills, &c.

      give notice to Wm Cook & Peter Morton or one of them that you will oppose the return of the men appointed from their Petition to divide the Lands as the facts as the Title are not truly stated in their Petition to the Court

George Read (1733-1798) was born in Maryland, the son of an Englishman who came to the American colonies from Ireland and had estates in Maryland and Delaware. The younger Read studied law in Philadelphia. In 1763, he married Gertrude Ross Till, and they had five children. They lived in Delaware, and in 1763, Read received appointment as Crown Attorney General for the three Delaware counties until 1774. Initially favoring reconciliation with Great Britain, Read served in the Continental Congress from 1774 to 1777. He voted against the Declaration of Independence but signed it after its adoption. He served as president of the convention that adopted the Delaware Constitution of 1776 and served in the state legislative council from 1776 to 1779. He represented Delaware in the Constitution Convention of 1787 and served as one of Delaware’s first U.S. Senators from 1789 to 1793. He was the Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court from 1793 until his death.
