Description:

Rodney Caesar 1728 - 1784 Declaration signer Caesar Rodney boldly signed document clip, 1772

Clipped document, 9" x 1.75', inlaid to a page. Boldly signed by Caesar Rodney "Caesar Rodney". Dated "twenty Eight day of May - Anno Domini 1772". Near fine

A fantastic example of a key person in US history. Rodney joined Thomas McKean as a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress in 1765 and was a leader of the Delaware Committee of Correspondence. He began his service in the Assembly of Delaware in the 1761/62 session and continued in office through the 1775/76 session. Several times he served as Speaker, including the momentous day of June 15, 1776 when "with Rodney in the chair and Thomas McKean leading the debate on the floor," the Assembly of Delaware voted to sever all ties with the British Parliament and King!

Rodney signs this document clip as a witness to "Henry Rash" ... whose "solemn oath says that he is really seized of the Premises above mentioned, in his own right, and his won use, and that the same are free and clear from any former of other Gifts, Grants, Mortgages or other Incumbrances ..." . A lovely scarce example of this Declaration signer, with a bold signature and strong contrast.
