ELBRIDGE GERRY (1744-1814) Partly Printed Document Signed "E. Gerry" (with flourish beneath signature) as Governor of Massachusetts, 1 page, 9.25" x 14.75". Boston, Massachusetts. October 22, 1810. Countersigned, "Benjamin Homans" as Secretary of the States. Signed by Gerry beneath 2" -diameter blind embossed scalloped-edged state seal affixed with red wax. Minor flaws. Fine condition.

Appointment of Joshua Moody of Saco [Maine] "to be Coroner in our County of York..." Attestation on verso that Moody" personally appeared...& took & subscribed the Declaration & oaths prescribed by the Constitution of this State & a Law of the United States to qualify him to discharge the duties of the office to which he is appointed by this Commission..." Before statehood in 1820, Maine was part of Massachusetts.

Appointed Chief Clerk of the Navy Department after Gerry's inauguration as Madison's Vice President, Benjamin Homans (1765-1823) and First Lady Dolley Madison, prior to the 1814 British attack and burning of Washington, removed two wagon loads of the Navy Department's archives to north of the city, escaping the fate of other government libraries and agencies whose materials were destroyed or burned.
