Sherman Roger 1721 - 1793 Declaration and Constitution signer Roger Sherman early signed document, 1757

Single page, printed and manuscripted on one side, with verso containing a lengthy manuscripted docket. 6" x 6.5". Inlaid to another page to a size of 8" x 9.5" . Dated "16th Day of July ... 1757", and signed by "Elijah Adams', and "Roger Sherman Just Peace". Expected folds, toned, small minor archival restoration to support folds and fill in a several small losses to paper.


An excellent copy of a legal document, appearing as a lawsuit for non payment, signed by Roger Sherman as Justice of the Peace, the ONLY person to have ultimately signed all four great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution. This early legal document represents a lawsuit between a Plaintiff and a Defendant and is shown in part below representing a Plea of the case "whereupon the Plaintiff declares and says That the defendant ... promised the plaintiff to pay him (for value received)... and Now the plaintiff further says that the defendant, his promise aforesaid not regarding, hath never performed the same tho often Requested and Demanded" ...

"And for the Recovery thereof, with just costs the Plaintiff brings this Suit {Bond sufficient for Prosecution being given}. Hereof Fail not and of this Writ with your Doings there on make due Return according to Law. Dated at New Milford, the 16th Day Anno Domini 1757 And in the 31st year of his Majesty's Reign
