David Belasco (1853-1931) was an American theatrical producer, impresario, director, and playwright. As producer, he would be responsible for launching the theatrical career of many notable actors of the early 20th century, including James O'Neill, Mary Pickford, Lenore Ulric, and Barbara Stanwyck. Belasco is known for having pioneered many innovative new forms of stage lighting and special effects in order to create realism and naturalism.

"Deburau" is a 1918 French play by Sacha Guitry that also played on Broadway in a translation by Harley Granville-Barker at the Belasco Theatre between 1920-21. The plot was based on the life of Jean-Gaspard Deburau (1796-1846), a mime who frequently performed as the character Pierrot.
