Dealers' Lot of Mostly Political Autographs, Nearly 30 Pieces Featuring 13 Signers

A dealers' lot of autograph letters, typed letters, photographs, and other documents signed by mostly mid-twentieth-century political notables, including Democratic presidential hopefuls Estes Kefauver, Adlai Stevenson, and George Wallace. The majority of the autographed material was addressed to James Folsom, Sr., Governor of Alabama from 1955-1959. The lot of 28 pieces includes retained clerical copies and original transmittal envelopes, and features 13 different signers as well as a facsimile signature of Jimmy Carter, with material dating from ca. 1955-1990. Lewis measuring 11.5" x 14.375."

The signers are listed in alphabetical order:

- Jimmy Carter (born 1924), 39th U.S. President, PRINTED signature on thank you card with envelope, postmarked April 13, 1990.

- A.B. "Happy" Chandler (1898-1991), 2-term Kentucky Governor, two 1p typed letters signed with additional endorsements, September 6, 1956 and October 2, 1956. With Alabama and Democratic Party content.

- Rose A. Conway (1900-1980), personal secretary to 33rd U.S. Harry S. Truman, 1p typed letter signed with envelope, July 10, 1972.

- Douglas Edwards (1917-1990, CBS radio and television broadcaster, 1p typed letter signed dated April 11, 1958.

- Averell Harriman (1891-1986), New York Governor, two 1p typed letters signed dated May 19, 1956 and September 6, 1957. With content related to elder policy.

- Lewis B. Hershey (1893-1977), longtime director of the Selective Service, two 1p typed letters signed dated January 5, 1955 and June 30, 1955.

- Lister Hill (1894-1984), Alabama Congressman and Senator, two 1p typed letters signed as well as envelope, dated October 13, 1965 and February 3, 1967.

- Estes Kefauver (1903-1963), 2x Democratic presidential candidate, two 1p typed letters signed, one with an 18-word endorsement, dated June 22, 1955 and May 7, 1956 respectively. Terrific political content relating to the U.S. Congress.

- John L. Lewis (1880-1969), organized labor leader, three 1p typed letters signed with two envelopes dated June 13, 1955; February 14, 1957; and March 17, 1958. The first letter on "United Mine Workers of America" discusses the "right-to-wreck" Alabama legislation statute. Also included is a huge vintage black and white Chase (Washington, D.C.) studio photograph endorsed by Lewis and housed in protective wrappers. It measures 11.5" x 14.375."

- Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993), Protestant clergyman, 1p typed letter signed dated March 4, 1958.

- Will Rogers, Jr. (1911-1993), son of famous humorist, 1p typed letter signed dated February 21, 1956 referring to the "glorious army" of the Confederacy.

- Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965), 2x Democratic presidential candidate, two 1p typed letters signed dated August 4, 1955 and January 23, 1956. With 1956 presidential campaign content.

- Margaret Truman (1924-2008), 2pp autograph letter signed date-stamped April 28, 1955. Contains approximately 78 handwritten words on "MMT" stationery.

- George Wallace (1919-1998), 4-term Alabama Governor, 1p autograph letter signed docketed October 24, 1955.

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses who proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
