Dealer's Lot of Early American Politicians & Military, PSA/DNA Grades NM-MT 8 - MINT 9, 4 Pcs Total

A dealer's lot of highly collectible autographs from Early American statesmen and military commanders including Samuel Cooper; William H. Crawford; William F. Marcy; and Oliver Wolcott, Jr. The signature clips and free franked envelopes are all encapsulated and PSA/DNA certified and graded, with grades ranging from NM-MT 8 to Mint 9. Individual issues are elaborated below; please also refer to catalog photos for additional information related to the condition.The largest slab measures 12.375" x 5.5."

The lot consists of, in alphabetical order:

1. Samuel Cooper PSA Mint 9 FF

An envelope signed by Colonel Samuel Cooper ( 1798-1876), then in his role as Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, as "S. Cooper" in the postage section. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded Mint 9. Secretarially inscribed as "To / Hon. J.S. Morrill, / House of Representatives US. / Washington / D.C." and probably docketed by the recipient as "Col. S. Cooper / Adjt. Gen. / May 15, 1856 / reply for Henry Classon [?] / sent May 16, 1856" along the left edge. The partly printed envelope from the Adjutant General's Office shows light wear, including minor mounting traces verso, else near fine, the envelope measuring 8.5" x 3.875." The slab measures 12.375" x 5.5."

Samuel Cooper, a career soldier, attained the brevet promotion of colonel in the U.S. Army in May 1848 in recognition of his service during the Mexican-American War. In July 1852, he was appointed as Adjutant General of the U.S. Army, the army's chief administrative role. Cooper was a Northerner with strong Southern sympathies. He owned slaves and was a close associate of Jefferson Davis. Cooper resigned from the U.S. Army in March 1861 to become the highest ranking general in the Confederate States Army. Cooper's recipient, Justin Smith Morrill (1810-1898), had just begun his career as a U.S. Congressman from Vermont in 1855. Morrill sat for over 40 years in Congress, later serving as a U.S. Senator from Vermont.

2. William H. Crawford PSA NM-MT 8 Signature

A paper slip signed by William H. Crawford (1772-1834), then in his role as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, as "Wm H Crawford" near the center. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. N.d., though the document clip is also inscribed "this 24 " day of February 182--" verso. Near fine, the signed paper fragment measuring 3.5" x 2.75." The slab measures 7.25" x 4.25."

William H. Crawford oversaw the U.S. Treasury Department between 1816-1825, during the administrations of three presidents.

3. William F. Marcy PSA NM-MT 8 FF

An envelope signed by the 21st U.S. Secretary of State William L. Marcy (1786-1857) as "Free / W. L. Marcy" in the postage section. Encapsulated and PSA/DNA graded NM-MT 8. With a black round datestamp postmarked from Washington, D.C. on February 8, 1856. Inscribed in another hand with the name of Marcy's correspondent as "H.S. Randall Esqr. / Cortland / N.Y." Expected weathering to the envelope and minor mounting tabs found verso, else very good. The envelope measures 7.365" x 3.75." The slab measures 10" x 6.75."

William L. Marcy served as U.S. Secretary of State during the Pierce and Buchanan administrations, between March 1853-1857. Marcy's correspondent was almost certainly Henry S. Randall (1811-1876), a writer who served as the Secretary of State of New York between 1852-1853. Marcy probably knew Randall through his New York state connections.

4. Oliver Wolcott, Jr. PSA NM-MT 8 Signature

Part of a document signed by Oliver Wolcott, Jr. (1760-1833) as "Free / Oliv. Wolcott Jr." Encapsulated and graded NM-MT 8. N.d. Expected wear including a central vertical fold and mounting traces in the upper left corner verso, else near fine. The clipped signature measures 3.125" x 1.75." The slab measures 5.25" x 3.125."

Oliver Wolcott, Jr. served as 2nd U.S. Secretary of the Treasury between 1795-1800 during the Washington and Adams I administrations. Wolcott, Jr. was thus the successor of Alexander Hamilton in this prestigious cabinet position.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
