A small dealer's lot of 19th/20th C. reference books and literature related to indigenous populations of the United States, ca. 1860-1942. Various places. The collection features the work of George Catlin; Robert F. Keagle; John B. Newman; and John R. Swanton. The books discuss topics such as Native Americans customs and lifeways, Native American legends and oral histories, poetry inspired by Native Americans, and the history of Native American settlements and relocation to reservations. Expected wear consistent with age and use but in overall very good condition; individual condition issues will be addressed below. Stacked, the books measure approximately 6.5" x 9.375" x 4.5."

The lot includes (in alphabetical order):

1. George Catlin (1796-1872), "Letters and Notes on the Manners, Customs, and Condition of the North American Indians, Written During Eight Years' Travel Amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America" (Philadelphia: Willis P. Hazard, 190 Chestnut Street, 1857), Volume I of II. A manuscript inscription on one of the front free endpapers reads: "Presented to the Nu Pi Kappa Lib / by Edward Starr / April 1857." Rebound in brown cloth-covered boards and gilt-embossed spine, with a library reference number. Scattered foxing and ghost ink impressions from steel and wood illustration plates within, with isolated pencil underlining and margin inscriptions. Else near fine. Table of Contents: 7-16; 17-402. 5.625" x 8.75" x 1.875."

2. Robert F. Keagle, "Pocono Legends" (Hazleton, Pennsylvania: Press of Lusher and Lusher, 1942), signed by the author as "Robert F. Keagle" on the full title page. Stiff canary yellow chipboard covers. Expected wear including scattered foxing - including to covers - and ghost ink impressions from silhouettes by S. Osmanski. Unpaginated. 9.25" x 6.325" x .125."

3. John B. Newman, "Wa-Wa-Wanda: A Legend of Old Orange" (New York: Rudd & Carleton, 130 Grand Street, 1860). Violet cloth-covered pebbled boards, the covers emblazoned with a monogram design. Featuring book plate engravings as well as a fold-out map on onionskin depicting a "Map of Minisink Battle Ground," measuring 8.375" long fully unfolded. Expected wear including scattered foxing and toning within. A partial bookplate (illegible and mat burned) is affixed to the front pastedown endpaper. Moderate sunning to the cover edges and spine. The bottom spine is partially torn. Else very good. v-viii; 9-180; complete with Publisher's Advertisement in the rear. 5.375" x 7.5" x .875."

4. John R. Swanton (1873-1958), "Early History of the Creek Indians and Their Neighbors" (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1922), originally as printed in the Smithsonian Institution Bureau of American Ethnology, Bulletin 73. Ownership hand-stamps located on the full title page and free front endpaper. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt-embossed spine. Expected wear within including toning and edge darkening. An area of loss to the spine repaired with like green fabric. The back pocket containing plates is partly ripped and repaired. Else very good. Table of Contents: 5-6; Illustrations: 7; 9-456; Bibliography: 457-462; Index: 463-492, with all 10 Plates included in the rear. 6" x 9.25" x 1.875."

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
