Defend the line of Bachelors Creek as long as practicable to secure a safe retreat there…our fighting ground is here."

3. Autograph Letter Signed "Henry Stanton". Philadelphia, dated October 22, 1842. Addressed to Col. Thomas Aspinwal at the U.S. Consul in London. Writing from the Office of Purchase Quarter Masters Department, Stanton seeks Aspinwal's expertise on introducing iron bedstead (currently used in the British Army) into the U.S. Barracks service.

4. Autograph Letter Signed "Geo. D. Ransey, Bt. Major". Fort Monroe Arsenal, dated December 8, 1851. Addressed to Colonel John Mercier, giving clarification on the use of mortars at the Battle of Monterey.

5. Pay Roll. Richmond, dated March 31, 1865. Produced by Major Robert P. Riche, Quartermaster, for the month of March 1865. Twenty men are listed, with records of their occupation and compensation. Occupations include wheelrights, carpenters, blacksmiths, watchmen, and couriers.

6. Ordnance Document Signed "C.G. Harker". No place, dated December 31, 1859. Produced by 2nd Lt. C.G. Harker, 9th Infantry AAQM, Escort to N.W.B. Commission. A Quarterly Return of Ordnance & Ordnance Stores, for anvils, files, hammers, knives, punches, and other blacksmithing equipment.

The letters and documents have expected flattened mail folds with light soiling and some small separations in places. The group is overall very good.
