Description:

David Farragut CDV Boldly Signed With Rank, Gurney & Son Possibly Civil War Dated

A carte de visite of military commander David G. Farragut (1801-1870), signed by him with rank as "D.G. Farragut / Vice Admiral" near bottom verso. N.d. but ca. 1864-1866. The albumen print photo is on a stock mount printed "Gurney & Son / Photo N.Y." along the bottom recto, with a printed backstamp reading "Photographic Artists/ J. Gurney & Son, / 707 / Broadway / N.Y." at center verso, above Farragut's signature. A hand-cancelled 2-cent orange George Washington revenue stamp is affixed at upper right. Expected wear consistent with age including isolated surface scratches and slightly blunted mount corners, else near fine. 2.5" x 4."

Vice Admiral Farragut is depicted seated in a Victorian tasseled arm chair, leaning slightly to the right, with his right hand tucked between his partially unbuttoned naval uniform tunic.

We can date Farragut's signature and inscription to either the late Civil War or its immediate aftermath, because Farragut only ranked as the vice admiral for a scant 18-month-long period, from his Lincoln appointment to vice admiral on December 21, 1864, to his promotion to full admiral on July 25, 1866. Farragut's full admiralcy was the first of its kind in the history of the U.S. Navy and marked the culmination of a 60-year-long military career which included the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, and the Civil War.

Gurney & Son was one of the first photographers to operate in New York City after 1840. Photographer and gallery owner Jeremiah Gurney (1812-1895) had studied daguerreotype photography under Samuel F.B. Morse. Gurney & Son was headquartered at 707 Broadway Avenue from 1857-1869. Besides Farragut, Gurney & Son photographed J.E.B. Stuart, Abraham Lincoln (postmortem), and Walt Whitman, among others. The business dissolved after it moved to Fifth Avenue, in 1874.
