David Ben-Gurion TLS Re: Brit Roshonim Conference of Zionist Founders

A 1p typed letter in Hebrew signed by David Ben-Gurion (1886-1976), then in his role as Prime Minister of Israel, near bottom left. March 28, 1962. Jerusalem, Israel. On a single leaf of "Prime Ministry" stationery, complete with a blind-embossed Emblem of Israel at the center. Docketed at upper left. Expected wear including flattened transmittal folds, and double hole-punched along the right edge. Else near fine. 6.5" x 8.25." Accompanied by a full English translation.

Prime Minister Ben-Gurion was nearing the end of his second term as Prime Minister of Israel when he wrote this letter to Rabbi Dr. Mordechai Nurock (1884-1962). Nurock was born in modern-day Latvia and received an outstanding religious and secular education, becoming both a rabbi and Doctor of Philosophy. He had served in the Latvian legislature in the 1920s, anticipating his parliamentary service in Israel, first as a member of the Mizrachi Party, and then as a member of the National Religious Party, from the 1st through the 5th Knesset (1949-1962). Dr. Nurock was also a leading member of Brit Roshonim, a "seniors" organization of veteran Zionists and founders.

Ben-Gurion wrote, translated in part: "I have received with appreciation your invitation to the Brit Roshonim Conference to be held on April 4, 1962 and the following day in Tel Aviv. During these two days I will be in Tel Aviv - but these are the days when I will be busy with security matters at the General Staff and I am afraid I will not be able…to attend the conference, thus accept in writing my wishes that your discussions…will strengthen the organization…"

David Ben-Gurion would serve two terms as Defense Minister and Prime Minister respectively, between 1948-1954 and 1955-1963.
