Description:

Ben-Gurion David

4” x 2.75” black and white semi-glossy photograph signed, inscribed, and dated by David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973). Ben-Gurion’s signature in Hebrew along with the date “20.9.67” appear verso in dark blue ball point pen. The photograph shows the diminutive Ben-Gurion, in a black sweater and khaki pants, walking in the road with four companions. A single-story building, bicyclist, and car are visible in the background. In near fine condition.

David Ben-Gurion was born David Grun in 1886 in modern day Poland, then part of the Russian Empire. Ben-Gurion had already become intensely interested in Hebrew studies and Zionism by adolescence. He relocated to Palestine in his 20s, was deported to Egypt during World War I, and lived for several years in the United States between 1915-1918. Ben-Gurion returned to the Middle East after the war, where he actively participated in pro-labor and grassroots Zionist politics for the next twenty-five years. Ben-Gurion promptly declared the free state of Israel after the British mandate of Palestine expired in 1948. He served as Israel’s first prime minister almost uninterruptedly between 1948 and 1963. During the later part of his premiership, Ben-Gurion also served as Israeli Minister of Defense.

This photograph was taken in September 1967, just three months after the Six-Day War. In this conflict, precipitated by a disagreement over waterway access, Israel defeated an Arab coalition comprised of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Lebanon. Israel gained significant new territories like the Gaza Strip and West Bank, and reaffirmed its legitimacy in the region.

A candid snapshot of one of Israel’s founders!
