Description:

Carroll of Duddington Daniel

Handwritten receipt inscribed and signed by Washington, DC landowner Daniel Carroll of Duddington (1764-1849) in pen as "Danl Carroll of Dudn" at right. Payee and Assistant Secretary of the Navy John Boyle has confirmed payment and signed in pencil along bottom. Cream blue-lined paper slip is in very good to near fine condition, with expected paper folds and weathering. Slip measures 8" x 2.625".

The receipt recorded that John Boyle paid Daniel Carroll of Duddington $96 "in full for rent of lot. square 729" on April 4, 1843. Pierre L'Enfant (1754-1825), the French urban architect who designed Washington, DC in the early 1790s, modeled the nation's capital after a grid system like those found in Europe. Thus, Daniel Carroll's property was divided into squares, like the one mentioned here.

Daniel Carroll of Duddington was a major Washington, DC landowner whose property was later repurposed to house the U.S. Capitol and Library of Congress. L'Enfant called a rise on Carroll's land "a pedestal awaiting a monument"; today that rise is known as Capitol Hill.
