In this letter written the same year that he joined the London Missionary Society, 24-year-old David Livingstone wrote one "W.G. Wyon Esq" regarding a bust portrait of himself. After his marriage to Mary Moffat in 1845, the couple would have six children.

"My Dear Sir

I return my hearty thanks for your kind offer of a bust and as I would like it to be kept for my children I think my friend Mr Young would preserve it for them. Please tell him next this is not to hinder him from buying one of his own. Thanks again and kindest salutations to Mrs W. from yours +c

David Livingstone".

Livingstone first became interested in medical missionary work in his early 20s, studying in London, Glasgow, and Essex to become certified. Livingstone would spend extended periods of time over the next three decades In Africa. While there, he learned local languages, explored and charted the landscape, attempted to convert indigenous populations, and brought worldwide attention to problems inherent in the slave trade and colonization.
