David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) was an English novelist and short story writer whose works reflect on modernity, social alienation and industrialization while also championing sexuality and instinct. Lawrence's last novel, "Lady Chatterley's Lover," tells the story of Constance, a young woman married to a conservative baronet who becomes paralyzed from the waist down after a World War I injury. No longer receiving sexual attention from her husband, the Lady Chatterley begins an affair with their gamekeeper. The novel's main theme thus centers around her realization that she requires a connection of both mind and body, something she had not previously experienced with her emotionally cold husband.

This novel, along with his other well-known fictions including "Women in Love" (1920), "The Rainbow" (1915), and "Sons and Lovers" (1913), were the subject of censorship trials for their radical portrayals of romance, sexuality and the use of explicit language. Indeed, "Lady Chatterley's Lover" was first published privately in 1928 in Florence, followed by another 1929 printing in Paris. An uncensored edition was not published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960, after it was the subject of a watershed obscenity trial against the publisher, Penguin Books.
