A limited first edition of Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), "Crusade in Europe" (Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1948), signed by the author as "Dwight D Eisenhower." Eisenhower's dark and bold signature appears on a facsimile copy of his June 6, 1944, D-Day Order of the Day, inserted into one of the front loose endpapers facing the limitation page, as issued. Stated "First Edition" and "limited edition" on the copyright and limitation pages respectively. 704/1,426. Hardcover, in the publisher's reddish-tan buckram, with a gilt-embossed black panel on the spine. Top edge gilt, with deckled pages. Lacking an acetate jacket or slipcase. Minor toning to page edges, else clean and crisp. There are a few tiny spots of loss to the spine panel, and the slightest of bumps to the upper cover corners, else near fine to pristine. 6.5" x 9.75" x 2.25." 8vo. xiv, 559pp.

Eisenhower's book recounts his command experiences during World War II over the span of the conflict, from the North African, Italian, Sicilian, and French campaigns, to the final onslaught against the Nazis in Germany. In addition to serving as an invaluable firsthand account, Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe" is copiously illustrated with maps, photographs, and souvenir typescripts of important documents; there are 6 color maps including the full-spread maps on the pastedown endpapers, 38 text maps, and 16 illustrations. The book also includes several indices, a glossary of military code names, and an index. The depth and breadth of Eisenhower's account make it an authoritative historical source akin to Winston Churchill's 6-volume memoir, "The Second World War" (London: Cassell, 1948-1953).

A 5-star General in the U.S. Army, Dwight D. Eisenhower served as 1st Supreme Allied Commander of Europe for 13 months, between December 1943 to the disbanding of the organization in mid-July 1945. He served as 34th U.S. President from 1953 to 1960.
