1p, measuring 8" x 12.25", St. Petersburg, dated January 10, 1853. A formal letter written in Russian signed "Nicholas" in Russian and addressed to his cousin-by-marriage, Friedrich Wilhelm, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A letter of friendship to the "Illustrious Prince, Brother & Relative", reading in full (translated):

"The wishes expressed to me by Your Royal Highness on the New Year's day I consider as a sign of your friendly disposition to me and convey to Your Highness my sincere wish that the Almighty may grant you always all desirable felicity to Your Highness and to Your Grand-Ducal House - remaining with unchangeable friendship to you. Your Royal Highnesses' Good Brother and Relative, Nicholas." Countersigned by the Chancellor of the Empire, Count Nesselrode. On verso had been attached a translated copy of the letter - it has become detached but still remains with the piece. The letter has flattened mail folds, with minor toning and soiling. Boldly signed. Accompanied by the original folder and printed description used by Maggs Bros. Ltd., Ca. 1990. Expected wear to the folder, with original pencil notations.

Nicholas I of Russia (1796-1855) reigned as Emperor of Russia, King of Congress Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland from 1825 until his death in 1855, succeeding his brother Alexander I, who died of typhus. His controversial reign saw geographical expansion and industrialization, but also great political repression and mistreatment of Jewish citizens. The year following this letter, Nicholas' aggressive policy towards Turkey drew him into the Crimean War against England and France. He shared a happy marriage with Princess Charlotte of Prussia (1798-1860), who was cousin to Frederick William, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1819-1904).
