Stephen Douglas
n.p., ca. 1860
Currier & Ives Douglas / Johnson Democratic Banner Lithograph, 1860
Broadside

A tinted lithograph of the Stephen A. Douglas and Herschel V. Johnson "National Democratic Banner." 1860, Currier & Ives, New York. Extreme margins exhibit toning, while blank margin around image bears light offsetting. Otherwise, evenly toned, with bright tinting. Measures 10" x 14".

In this unusual election, Douglas and Johnson ran in a four-way race against Republicans Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin, Southern Democrats John C. Breckenridge and Joseph Lane, and Constitutional Unionists John Bell and Edward Everett.

Lincoln and Douglas had gained national attention two years earlier through the "Lincoln-Douglas Debates," in which Lincoln challenged Douglas, the incumbent, for his seat in the Senate representing Illinois. A hotly debated topic was slavery in newly-formed states. Douglas favored an approach of popular sovereignty, in which each new state would decide whether or not to allow slavery, while Lincoln argued that "a house divided cannot stand" and union was all-important. Douglas won the senate seat in 1858, but Lincoln won the presidency in 1860.

Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was one of the most talented politicians of the mid-nineteenth century, whose great oratorical skills outweighed his small physical stature. The "Little Giant" is best remembered for his role in the celebrated Lincoln-Douglas debates during the 1858 Illinois Senate race.

Herschel V. Johnson (1812-1880) was Stephen Douglas' running mate against Abraham Lincoln in the election of 1860. Although Johnson initially opposed the idea of secession, when it became a fact he reluctantly joined the Confederate cause. His contradictions represented the conflict that many Georgians felt about disunion; however once committing to the Confederate side, Johnson went on to serve as a member of the Confederate Senate, from 1862 to 1865, and then as President of the 1865 Georgia Constitutional Convention.
