County Surveyor Prepares Survey of Revolutionary War Veteran's Land in Middlesex County, Connecticut

Oliver Blakeslee, the county surveyor for Middlesex County, Connecticut, prepared this survey in October 1786 at the request of Captain John N. Wadsworth.

[SURVEYING.] Oliver Blakeslee, Autograph Document Signed, Survey of Samuel Hart's farm for John N. Wadsworth, October 26, 1786. 1 p., 20.25" x 16". Tear on center fold nearly complete; tears and some loss to edges; soiling on verso.
With two related maps of the larger Coginchaug River area in 1700, with notes of disposition of some of the property, 1703-1773. 2 pp., each 10" x 8". One has edge tears, not affecting text.

John N. Wadsworth (1732-1787) was born in Connecticut, and in 1757 married Esther Parsons, with whom he had at least three sons. Wadsworth was one of those who responded to the Lexington Alarm in 1775. He served as a captain in the Revolutionary War. His brother James Wadsworth (1730-1817) was a general in the Connecticut militia during the Revolutionary War and a delegate to the Continental Congress.

Samuel Hart (1735-1805) was born in Connecticut and married Bridget Fowler in Durham in 1759. They had seven children, and he was a farmer. He served as a lieutenant in Captain Camp's Company in the Revolutionary War.

Oliver Blakeslee (1741-1824) was born in New Haven, Connecticut. He married Elizabeth Humiston in 1762 but divorced her in 1798. They had eleven children together. In 1799, he married the widow, Susanna Tuttle. He served as surveyor of Middlesex County, Connecticut, in 1786.
