Description:

Count Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin ALS, Authenticated & Slabbed by Beckett Grading Services

A German language postcard signed by Count Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin (1838-1917) as "G.F. Zeppelin" at lower right verso. The postcard is dated January 6, 1915 and was sent from Stuttgart, Germany to an unidentified German soldier or officer named Müller. The content is untranslated. Zeppelin inscribed four lines of text verso, and also engrossed the manuscript portions recto, including the writing of his name as "Graf Zeppelin" along the extreme left edge recto. Expected wear including light toning, isolated water stains, and weathering, else near fine. The postcard measures 5.5" x 3.5" while the slab measures 9" x 6." Beckett Grading Services assigned this authentic autograph serial number 0009623280.

In the mid-1870s, Count Graf Ferdinand von Zeppelin first started planning the airship that would later bear his name. Work continued and accelerated during the 1890s, when patents were issued, air trials conducted, a joint stock company was established, and financing was undertaken. By the early twentieth century, Zeppelin airships had successfully transported over 37,000 passengers on over 1,600 flights. They would also prove highly effective in a military application. Zeppelins were frequently deployed during World War I for reconnaissance and bombing missions. The most famous Zeppelin, the "Graf Zeppelin"--the hydrogen-filled, gas-powered rigid airship constructed between 1926-1928--completed its first intercontinental flight in 1928, its first round-the-world flight in 1929, its Europe-Pan America flight in 1930, and its first Arctic flight in 1931.
