Description:

Coulton Waugh's "Dickie Dare", 3 Large Comic Strips, Original Artwork

Three oversized comic strips of the American comic strip, "Dickie Dare". Originally created by Milton Caniff in 1933 before being taken over by Coulton Waugh the following year. The comic follows Dickie Dare, a 12-year-old boy who takes readers along with him upon fantasies of adventures with historical and literary legends the likes of Robin Hood and King Arthur. All strips have light edge toning, with a few small spots of soiling, mostly at the margins. Else very good.

1. April 9, [no year]. Measures 25.5" x 7". Distributed by AP Feature Service. Marked "Something Personal", showing Dan Flynn being bombarded by cannon fire, compliments of a Maharajah.

2. February 17, [no year]. Measures 25.5" x 7". Distributed by AP Feature Service. Marked "The Tortoise and the Hare", showing Flynn riding an elephant, being chased by The Maharajah in a car mounted with a machine gun.

3. February 13, [no year]. Measures 25.5" x 7". Distributed by AP Feature Service. Marked "Parting Shot", where Flynn escapes captivity by crashing through the gates on a large elephant.

Dickie Dare was first published on July 31, 1933, by Milton Caniff, prior to his creation of the action-adventure strip Terry and the Pirates. The story was influenced by popular series such as Flash Gordon and held a fantasy element until Caniff shifted the tone to a more realistic plot in the spring of 1934. He added the character of Dan Flynn, who was a free-lance writer with who Dickie traveled the world. Waugh took over in late 1934 and drew for the strip for nearly 10 years. He stepped away to pursue other projects in 1944 but returned to the comic in 1950. The strip's final publication was on October 12, 1957.
