Description:

Hopkinson Francis 1737 - 1790 Continental Loan Office Third Bill of Exchange signed by Signer of the Declaration of Independence Francis Hopkinson

A partly printed document signed "F. Hopkinson" above the title Treasurer of Loans, 1 page, 8.5" x 3.75". United States of America, February 20, 1779. Third Bill of Exchange included with a countersignature by a "Tho: Smith". A fragile leaf with natural marginal wear, else is in fine condition.

The bill states, "Exch. 120 Dollars, at five Livres Tournois p Dollar. Numb 384... At Thirty Days Sight of this third Bill, First, Second and Fourth not paid, pay to Peter & Isaac Wikoff or Order, One Hundred and Twenty Dollars, in Six Hundred Livres Tournois, for Interest due on Money borrowed by the United States"

Francis Hopkinson was elected by Congress as Commissioner of Loans on July 27, 1778. Four signed bills were sent overseas to the French as a compensation for aid in the Revolutionary War. If the first bill was received it was valid for exchange, however, any of the bills were lost or captured as they were shipped amidst the chaos of the war. This particular bill was the third bill of exchange. Any of the four bills could be redeemed in Paris, but if one is exchanged all the other ones were deemed invalid.

Included with an endorsement on the back of the certificate in both English and French - a rare document at its finest.
