Description:

Contemporaneous Fair Copy of a speech by Charles II at the House of Commons in 1667, after his return to England: "...I doo [sic] attend to Govern by a Standing Army. I am more an Englishman than thou and if others will observe the law as I doo, there will be no fears of any such thing..."

Contemporaneous Manuscript Fair Copy of a speech of Charles II, entirely in a clerical hand, one page, folio, with the attached integral leaf, July 29, 1667, House of Commons. Written just seven years after his return to England, Charles defends his unpopular wars against the Dutch. In part, original spelling intact: "...I wonder what any one thing I have done since I came into England that should give occasion of jealous; and that I doo attend to Govern by a standing Army. I am more an Englishman than thou and if others will observe the law as I doo, there will be no fears of any such thing..." Charles II (1630 - 1685) was the King of England, Scotland and Ireland. According to the royalists, Charles II became king when his father Charles I was executed at Whitehall on January 30, 1649, the climax of the Second English Civil War. The English Parliament did not proclaim Charles II king at this time, however, and England entered the period known to history as the English Interregnum. The Parliament of Scotland, on the other hand, proclaimed Charles II King of Scots in 1649. Following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester on September 3, 1651, Charles fled to the continent and spent the next nine years in exile in France and the United Provinces. After the Protectorate collapsed under Richard Cromwell in 1659, General George Monck invited Charles to come to England and assume the throne. Charles II arrived on English soil May 23, 1660, and his return marks the beginning of the Restoration period. Age toning, wear to edges, otherwise very good.
