Description:

Livingston William 1723 - 1790 William Livingston, the Constitution Signer, signs a document with two fellow editors of the political journal, the Independent Reflector: part of an archive of eight manuscript documents from a prominent Dutch family residing in New York and New Jersey Archive. Eight Manuscript Docments pertaining to William Livingston (1723-1790), John Morrin Scott (1730-1784) and William Smith, Jr. (1728-1793)

1) Document Signed "Wil: Livingston" as arbitrator in a probate dispute, together with fellow arbitrators, "Whitehead Hicks", "Wm Smith Jun", and "Jno Morris Scott[?]" 3pp. 11 x 15 in., 28 February 1766, some toning, fold separations and marginal wear.

Document concerns arbitration over the disputed title to land owned by "Jochum Staats deceased" in 1711. A document signed by the founders of The Independent Reflector, established in 1752 to challenge the powerful Anglican faction in New York headed by the De Lancey family. The journal was forced to close due to political pressure after about a year. John Morin Scott was a founding member of the Sons of Liberty in New York and fought with Washington in the New York campaign of 1776. The English-born William Smith, Jr. remained neutral during the American Revolution but had to flee to the British lines in 1778 when rebel authorities accused him of treason and threatened execution. Smith returned to England in 1783. Additionally signed by Whitehead Hicks who served as Mayor of New York from 1766 to 1776.

In 1770 William Livingston moved to Elizabethtown, New Jersey after his political fortunes declined in New York. He represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress and later did the same during the 1787 Constitutional Convention. This may explain the presence of seven additional documents that mostly concern several Dutch families in Essex and Bergen County New Jersey as well as Duchess and Albany County, New York.
