Description:

Gorham Nathaniel 1738 - 1796 Constitution signer Nathaniel Gorham, boldly signed and autographed partial page, 1781

Partial page, 8" x 1.75" on laid paper, dated "July 11, 1781, autographed and signed by "Nathaniel Gorham" as "Justice Peace", Page is overall toned , imperceptible archival support to bottom edge, and two mounting hinge remnants on verso. Boldly scripted with strong contrast.

A lovely example of this signer of the Constitution which would show very well framed. Nathaniel Gorham was a politician and merchant from Massachusetts, and the Massachusetts delegate to the Continental Congress. For several months in 1787, Gorham frequently served as Chairman of the Convention's Committee of the Whole, meaning that he (rather than the President of the Convention, George Washington) presided over convention sessions during the delegates' first deliberations on the structure of the new government in late May and June 1787. After the convention, he worked hard to see that the Constitution was approved in his home state.
