Description:

"Connecticut Gazette" Newspaper Notice "Three Dollar Reward" for Runaway

4pp, measuring 12.75" x 20.25", New London, Connecticut, dated May 12, 1813. An issue of the "Connecticut Gazette", Vol. L, No. 2583, with foreign reports, local news, and various advertisements and notices. One such notice, on page 4, was published on behalf of Ebenezer Morgan and offers a "THREE DOLLARS REWARD" for a runaway indentured "Black Boy, by the name of BOB, about 16 years old". The notice goes on to state that "All persons are forbid harboring, trusting or employing said Boy on penalty of the law." The boy appears to have run away from Groton, Connecticut, around the date of April 27, 1813. The newspaper has flattened folds, toning, soiling, and foxing. Numerous holes, separations, and small tears have been repaired with tape. Chipping at edges.

The state of Connecticut sought to halt the importation and exportation of slaves in 1774, with the passage of the "Act for Prohibiting the Importation of Indian, Negro or Mulatto Slaves". From there, it began a gradual emancipation of slaves in 1784, through the passage of the "Gradual Abolition Act". However, slavery was not officially outlawed until 1848, making Connecticut one of the last states in the North to do so. As a substitute to slavery, some used indentured servitude as a means to still get slave-level labor.
