Confederate
Houston, TX, April 23-24, 1865
Confederate Soldier's Petition Endorsed by Gen J.B. Magruder & Col Peter C. Hardeman
AES
A Civil War-dated endorsed letter by Generals John B. Magruder and Colonel Peter C. Hardeman. 1 sheet (front and back), measuring 8" x 10.25", Houston, dated April 23-24, 1865. The original letter was addressed to Hardeman by James M. Stratton, 1st Co. of Hardeman's Regiment, who writes that he found himself dropped from the Rolls upon his return from sick leave. He goes on to request to be restored both to his position and to duty. Endorsed and signed by "P Hardeman" and "J B Magruder" on verso. The letter has flattened folds with light toning and soiling throughout. Boldly signed, very good overall.

John Bankhead Magruder (1807-1871) was a graduate of West Point who served with distinction during the Mexican–American War and was a prominent Confederate Army genera. During the 1862 Peninsula Campaign, he played a major part in delaying the advance of Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan's Army of the Potomac.

Peter Hardeman (1831–1882) was a Confederate officer who raised a company of mounted volunteers, Second Regiment of Texas Mounted Rifles, and served under Col. John Robert Baylor in the New Mexico campaign. After taking part in other New Mexico expeditions, Hardeman was transferred to the command of the Arizona Brigade and, later, Hardeman's Texas Battalion. After the Civil War, Hardeman took his family to Brazil, where he spent the remainder of his life rather than take the oath of allegiance to the Union.
