Description:

Confederate POW Signs Oath of Allegiance and Is Released June 5, 1865

A certificate of release for a Confederate Prisoner of War, together with a sworn statement by the released prisoner, at the end of the Civil War. Headquarters at Point Lookout, Maryland, dated June 5, 1865. The two pages have been adhered together along one margin, measuring 8.125" x 5.25". Both have flattened folds, with varying degrees of toning, soiling, and foxing. Some minor glue residue at the edge. Very good overall.

The sworn statement is from Robert W. Grayson of Madison, Virginia, who has signed at the conclusion with his "x" mark, swearing he will "support, protect and defend the Constitution and Government of the United States against all enemies, whether domestic or foreign, and that I will bear true faith, allegiance and loyalty to the same…". Witnessed by two others, and including Grayson's appearance: Fair hair and complexion with blue eyes, standing 5'9".

The second document, adhered to the first, is the Certificate of Release of Prisoner of War, certifying that Grayson "is in conformity with instructions from the War Department, hereby released and discharged." Signed and stamped by A.G. Brady, Major and Provost Marshal. On verso is a printed Oath and Parole statement.

Robert W. Grayson enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army on July 25, 1861. He was soon after mustered into Company "K" of the 7th Virginia Infantry, which he served with for the entirety of the war. He was wounded at the battle of Williamsburg in May 1862 and was captured by Union forces at Sailor's Creek and taken as a prisoner of war on April 6, 1865. He was held at Point Lookout for two months until he signed this Oath of Allegiance and was discharged.
