Description:

Price Sterling 1809 - 1867 Confederate Major General Sterling Price document signed as Governor of Missouri
Partly Printed Document Signed "Sterling Price" as Governor of Missouri and "John M. Richardson" as Secretary of State, 1 page, April 15, 1853. Completed in manuscript. City of Jefferson, Missouri, 11.5" x 8", left portion covered by six $30 Interest Coupons. Affixed to a 11.75" x 17.25" sheet of thin brown paper with one $17.50 and twenty-three $30 Interest Coupons affixed beneath the document. Each 3.5" x 1" Interest Coupon bears the signature "A W Morrison" as Treasurer and is due every six months from 1869-1883. Circular punch holes on bond and each interest coupon do not touch either Price's or Richardson's signatures as they do on may of these bonds. Light show-through at Price's signature from stamping on verso. Minor flaws. Good condition.

This $1000 Missouri bond is payable to State Treasurer A.W. Morrison for one thousand dollars in thirty years. Alfred W. Morrison (1802-1883) was Treasurer of Missouri from 1853-1861, storing state funds in the attic of his Fayette, Missouri house. Rather than take the oath of loyalty to the Union, Morrison resigned in 1861.

John M. Richardson (1820-1889) was Secretary of State of Missouri from 1853-1857. A supporter of Abraham Lincoln, he was appointed Colonel and raised a regiment of the Missouri State Militia in the southwestern part of the state, and saw further service during the war as its commander, his regiment taking part in several battles.
