Confederate Major General Joseph Wheeler (1836-1906), known as "fightin' Joe" who let his troops in vigorous opposition to Sherman during the Atlanta campaign pens a letter to his daughters, just a few years before his death.

"My darlings

Thank you dears for you recent letters. Any tax that comes for me please open + use what is in it + let me know who to thank. Have been very busy today ... It is dry and not disagreeable.

With all my love,

Your devoted father

Joseph Wheeler"

Joseph Wheeler has the rare distinction of serving as a general during wartime for two opposing forces: first as a noted cavalry general in the Confederate States Army in the 1860s during the American Civil War, and later as a general in the United States Army during both the Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War near the turn of the twentieth century. For much of the Civil War he served as the senior cavalry general in the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles in the Western Theatre.

A lovely example in collectible condition.
