Confederate Artillery Captain, Fine Victorian Portrait

A late Victorian portrait of Captain Ruel Wooten Anderson (1837-1903), a Georgia farmer who served in the infantry and artillery of the Confederate Army between 1861-1865. Pastel on curved card stock and displayed in a fancy painted gesso frame under convex bubble glass. Stamped "Made and Sold by Chicago Portrait Company, Chicago, IL" verso.  Scattered isolated surface loss, else near fine. Minor wear including checking to the frame. Not examined out of frame. Approximately 24.75" x 19" x 1.75".

The portrait, likely started life as a photograph which was colored and shows Captain Anderson in his Confederate uniform, seated next to a wide-brimmed hat and balancing a saber in his lap. He is haloed by a vibrant blue background that contrasts with the gray of his uniform and the pallor of his skin. Comes with a frame label engraved "Capt. Ruel W. Anderson, C.S.A. / State of Georgia Artillery / Commander Anderson's Battery / 1861-1865". Also accompanied by provenance information, on Anderson's genealogy and Confederate War medals, originally acquired from the estate sale at Captain R.W. Anderson's home in Pulaski County, Georgia.

Ruel W. Anderson was born in Pulaski County, in central Georgia approximately 50 miles southeast of Macon. Anderson enlisted during the summer of 1861 and served almost continuously until April 1865. After April 1862, Captain Anderson commanded a battery company which saw action in Georgia and the Carolinas. Besides being invalided for typhoid fever, Captain Anderson was also wounded three times, at the Battles of  Chickamauga (September 18-20, 1863); New Hope Church (May 25-26, 1864); and Nickajack Creek (also known as Ruff's Mill, July 4, 1864). In addition, two horses were shot from under Captain Anderson at the Battle of Griswoldville (November 22, 1864). After the Civil War, Anderson dabbled in banking, state politics, and trade. He was a longtime Baptist deacon.

The Chicago Portrait Company, which operated between 1893-1940, mass produced family portraits like these. Using photographs, they created likenesses in either pastel or sepia onto card stock and presented them to the customer, who was then pressured to invest in an expensive domed glass frame.

A handsome Victorian portrait of a Confederate war veteran!
