THURSDAY EVENING, DECEMBER 18th, 1879.

CAMP FIRE

IN HONOR OF

COMRADE U.S. Grant

BY THE

Grand Army of the Republic of Philadelphia."

The evening's patriotic program of events featured musical performances, speeches, and the recitation of stirring contemporary poems like "By the Left Flank," "The Surrender," and "The Wounded Soldier." Ceremonies were led by Grand Army of the Republic post members and Civil War veterans. It is possible that Ulysses S. Grant actually attended this concert, since he had just returned from his 2 1/2-year-long world tour in September 1879, and in fact lived in Philadelphia.

U.S. Grant (1822-1885) was lionized not only because of his exemplary Civil War military service, but also for his difficult two-term presidency. Grant had left the White House in March 1877.

The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization founded by Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson, an Illinois surgeon, in 1866. The brotherhood welcomed veteran servicemen from all branches of the United States military. It's estimated that there were almost half a million members at the organization's peak in 1890, who were affiliates of 7,500 national outposts (20 of which were located in the city of Philadelphia alone.) Post 2, of whom many of this event's Reception Committee Delegates belonged, was the largest G.A.R. post in Philadelphia.

The American Academy of Music was used primarily as a concert hall and opera house, but it occasionally hosted special events and receptions like this musicale. The brick and brownstone building built in the "Round Arch Style" between 1855-1857 is still in use today, and features a lavishly decorated 3,000-person auditorium fitted with balconies.

Some 15 years after the end of the Civil War, Philadelphia's Union veterans celebrate city resident and former 18th U.S. President U.S. Grant!
