Goldsborough John 1809 - 1877 Commodore John Goldsborough writes to his wife: "I will fight the devil for my country"
Revealing Autograph Letter Signed "husband John",5" x 7", 3 pages darkly penned by Commodore John Goldsborough, who informs his wife of "vessels to put to sea which they did to the number of nearly twenty bound south under a convoy of the sloop of war Vandalia", whichwas among the first Naval duties of the war in 1861. Goldsborough continues, "I believe we will reach the land of Dixie without accident ... I think Dupont (Rear Admiral S. F. Dupont) has shown good judgement in what he did today -Would those asterick in a former letter make up letters enough for you to cypher the word Beaufort, Georgia try and see if they will don't think of repeating the word to a single living soul - I hope to see the Stars and Stripes floating there before many days ... I will fight the devil for my country" he follows with more patriotic sentiment of what is clearly the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron's 1861 expedition against the Confederacy.
