Washington, George (1732-1799) Commemorative circular medallion in wooden frame manufactured at Mount Vernon in the mid-19th century from a tree grown at Mount Vernon

Commemorative circular medallion with encapsulated lithograph in wooden frame with picture of George Washington. Head and shoulders portrait of Washington above a slate stating his birth and death date. Mount Vernon is seen on a hill in the background. Designed by Hammatt Billings, engraved by the American Bank Note Company.

Printed at perimeter on front of medallion: "Designed by H. Billings. Engraved by the American Bank Note Co. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1859 by H. Barnes in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts." Medallion measures 2" in diameter and wooden frame measures 3" in diameter.

Label on verso of the wooden frame: "Washington, D.C., 14th Nov. 1859, I hereby certify that the picture-frame stamped FROM MOUNT VERNON, J. CRUTCHETT, (to which this is attached), was manufactured at the 'MOUNT VERNON FACTORY' from wood grown at MOUNT VERNON, the home and resting-place of the immortal GEORGE WASHINGTONÉ" The label also mentions certificates, no longer present, from the proprietor of Mount Vernon and the last Washington to live there, John A. Washington, and the Mayor of Washington City, dated Nov. 12th 1856. Continuing, "This beautiful GEM, gives an artistic likeness of GENERAL WASHINGTON together with a view of the MANSION of MOUNT VERNON &TOMB of Washington. J. CRUTCHETT. THIS BEAUTIFUL GEM. framed in Mt. Vernon wood, can only be had, wholesale and retail at HORACE BARNES & CO. 123 WASHINGTON STREET, BOSTON or their Agents throughout the United States."

Circular medallion is detached from the wooden frame base but can easily be reattached. General wear and toning to the descriptive label on verso. Overall, Very Good condition.
