Printed copy of General Orders No. 99, recommending twenty-one soldiers for "gallant conduct" mention or special distinction, most from the 4th Calvary of the U.S. Army. Issued from the Headquarters of the Army in Washington, D.C. on November 19, 1872 by command of General Sherman. Signed in type by E.D. Townsend, Adjutant General, at bottom. Small sheet measuring 4.25" x 6.75" in near fine condition. A few spindle holes along left margin and partial red pen inscription along bottom.


"Reports have been received of an engagement with hostile Indians the 29th September, 1872, on the North Fork of Red River, near the mouth of McLellan's Creek, Texas, by the expedition under command of Colonel R.S. MacKenzie, 4th Cavalry. The following named officers are specially mentioned for gallant conduct…On the recommendation of the General of the Army, the Secretary of War has awarded medals of honor for the following enlisted men, reported as specially distinguished in the engagement…By command of General Sherman [signed in type], E.E. Townsend, Adjutant General. "


Col. MacKenzie and his 4th Cavalry smashed the Commanches in the Red River Wars of 1871-75. President Grant called him the most promising officer in the Army. At the above battle, Mackenzie, launching his attack from Fort Richardson, struck 262 Commanche lodges and killed between 30 and 60 warriors, took 124 women and children prisoners, burned their tepees, and made off with a thousand ponies.
