Colton's Map of the United States, The Canadas &c. New York

Colton's Map of the United States, The Canadas &c. New York: J.H. Colton & Co., 1857. A pocket-sized, fold-out map measuring 32.5" x 27" when unfolded. The map details the eastern United States, showing the country up to Nebraska, the Kansas Indian Territory, and a portion of Texas. Showing the railroads, canals, and stage roads. With large insets of "The Isthmus of Panama", "The United States, Central America", and "New England and Eastern New York". Hand-colored outlines of each state. The border of the map is decorated with an intricate agricultural motif. Housed in brown blind stamped cloth-covered boards, measuring 5.5" x 3.5", with gilt lettering on the front cover. The inside front pastedown has a small catalog of all the other maps, atlases, guides, and books that J.H. Colton and Co. sold at the time. The map has flattened folds with significant separations. Edge toning and soiling. Spots of staining throughout. There is a small amount of adhesive staining at the left edge of the map where the page was glued onto the boards.

Joseph H. Colton (1800-1893) founded his mapmaking company in 1831 and soon became an international leader in the mapmaking business. His hand-colored maps were made with engraved steel plates, which produced higher quality prints than those made with wax engravings. In the early 1850s, he brought his two sons into the business and expanded operations to include gazetteers and atlases.
