Hezekiah Luther (1639-1723) was born in Taunton, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America. He married Elizabeth (1639-1665) in 1661 and they had two sons. Luther's occupation is listed as carpenter, inn keeper and holder of Swansea civic offices, including town clerk and surveyor of highways.

New Meadow Neck, which encompasses the peninsula between the Barrington and Palmer Rivers, was a valuable part of the Wampanoags' Soames territory. The Wampanoag are a Native American people of the Northeastern Woodlands, currently based in southeastern Massachusetts and formerly parts of eastern Rhode Island. Their historical territory includes the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Prior to English contact in the 17th century, the Wampanoag numbered as many as 40,000 people living across 67 villages composing the Wampanoag Nation. In 1623, Edward Winslow and John Hampden came to Soames from Plymouth in a diplomatic visit to Wampanoag Chief Massasoit. Finding the chief ill, the men nursed him with a mixture of English and native food and Massasoit recovered.
