Collection of Three Early California Mining Stocks & Bonds
Archive
Three early California mining stock and bond certificates. Included are two stocks from the American River, Water & Mining Company and the Ave Maria Gold Quartz Mine, dated 1855 and 1851 respectively. The third is a City of Sonora Bond, dated 1853. All three have flattened folds with light wear, toning, and soiling to the edges. All are boldly signed. Very good overall.

Includes:
1. American River, Water & Mining Co., No. 172. Sacramento, California, dated July 20, 1855. Issuing 1 share of $250 Capital Stock to F. B. French. Signed by the company President and Secretary. Blank on verso. The American River Water and Mining Company was formed in 1854 to help divert water from the North Fork of the American River. It also owned water flumes and provided water for hydraulic mining during the California Gold Rush.

2. Ave Maria Gold Quartz Mine, No. 27096-27100. Mariposa, California, dated ca. September 1851. Issuing 5 shares of £1 each to the bearer of this certificate. Printed on both sides, scallop-cut left edge. With ink signatures of Secretary and two committee members on front. This is a fantastic example of early British investment in the California Gold Rush.

3. City of Sonora Bond, No. 49. Sonora, California, dated October 1, 1853. Promising to pay $100 to the Mayor two years after the date of the certificate. Signed by the Treasurer and City Clerk, as well as by the Mayor, George Washington Patrick. Mayor Patrick was an early settler of Sonora and one of its first mayors. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, he left Sonora to volunteer his services to the Confederate Army. Although he was refused a commission and did not serve in the army, he remained in the South until his death in 1886.
