Collection of Over 55 Patriotic Civil War Covers, Including Over Rare Confederate Examples
Archive
A fine collection of over 55 patriotic transmittal covers from the Civil War era, including a number of excellent and rare Confederate examples. Neatly housed in a binder and in overall very good condition. A sampling of covers is shown; we invite bidders to view the entire collection in our Connecticut offices, and review terms and conditions about lots containing five pieces or more.

Notable Confederate covers include: two covers featuring woodblock images of Jefferson Davis (Malpass #2); several covers featuring 7-13 Star Secession flag (Malpass #2, 7-8), three covers showing Washington, Martha Washington and one other woman from the "One of the Rebels" series of 11 (Malpass #1, 2 and 5); a cover featuring "The Flag of the Oppressed" (Malpass #7-21), and many more.

Other notable covers include Union examples such as those with the design of a devil holding the insignia for the states of Alabama, Louisiana and South Carolina; the hanging of Jefferson Davis; covers featuring Generals "Beast" Butler, Winfield Scott and George McClellan; and a great example of a slave stowing Jefferson Davis away in a refrigerator, stating: "Oh Massa Jeff you is a big thing on Ice."

To dub the Civil War as an era of "high emotions" is a massive understatement, yet the polarized sides of the conflicts begged expression of their personal political ideology and display of loyalty. Patriotic transmittal covers became a highly popular way to deliver one's opinions without saying a word, and thousands of letters were sent in these useful items-turned-propaganda. Confederate covers often featured 7- to 13-starred flags and images of war such as cannons, soldiers, tents and other signifiers of battle. Occasionally, more graphic depictions of alliance were evidenced in designs: showing the hanging of Lincoln, or those honoring John Bill. The more common Union covers tended to stress the concepts of liberty and unity while citing historical figures representing those values. Others took jabs at the "backwardness" of the "Rebels," and used Christian imagery such as the devil to hammer home the message of the evils of Secession and slavery.
