This attractive group of three ninth plate tintypes includes:

1. An image of a young gentleman seated in an upholstered chair with a backdrop picturing an ironclad vessel, 2” x 2.5”, no place, circa 1861-65. Gilt coloring has been added to his pinky ring and the buttons on his vest. Housed in a wooden case covered with embossed brown leather. Front of case has a five-point star. Gilt painted border on inside and outside of case. Decorative velvet cover pad protects the glass cover of tintype. Functional brass hook and eye clasp keeps the case firmly closed. Minor surface imperfections to tintype, case with light expected wear.

2. A head and shoulders image of a heavily bearded man in uniform, 2” x 2.5”, no place, circa 1861-65. Housed in a wooden case covered with embossed dark brown leather. Decorative velvet cover pad protects the glass cover of tintype. Functional brass hook and eye clasp keeps the case firmly closed. Minor surface imperfections to tintype, light pitting to glass, case with expected wear.

3. An image of three uniformed men standing together, 2” x 2.5”, no place, circa 1861-65. One of the men has his hand on the shoulder of a fourth person who is seated, but not visible. Housed in a wooden case covered with embossed leather. Decorative velvet cover pad protects the glass cover of tintype. Functional brass hook and eye clasp keeps the case firmly closed. Minor surface imperfections and creases to tintype, case with expected wear with fading to decorative gilt paint.

The tintype was invented in the 1850s and was most popular during the Civil War due to its low cost and durability. During the photographic process, an emulsion was applied directly to a thin sheet of iron (not tin!) coated with a dark lacquer or enamel, which produced a unique positive image.
