Porter Cole

Cole Porter, Typed Letter Signed, to Paris Opera Ballet dancer Micheline Bardin

One page typed letter signed on Waldorf Astoria letterhead, 7" x 10.5". Dated " Nov 10, 1954", and signed by Cole Porter as "Cole Porter". Fine condition with expected folds.

Cole Porter who was well into his illustrious career, writes to  Micheline Bardin, soon to be famous soloist in Balanchine's New York City Ballet Company. He assists her with her desire to get work "in this country" as shown in part below:

". . . As for mentioning that I produce shows: it is incorrect. I merely write music and lyrics for shows.

'. . . I highly recommend the following agent: LESTER SCHURR . . . .

'I cannot assure you that he can get you work in this country, but I can vouch for his complete honesty, besides which he has a brother, Louis Schurr, in Hollywood, who is completely reputable; and this makes a very good tie-up with both centers of entertainment: New York City, N.Y. and Los Angeles, California. . . ."

As it would turn out, Micheline Bardin Levin, a Paris-born ballerina would go on and become a CBC Television actress,  and dance with Balanchine and the New York City Ballet as a soloist. She came to the states and held a career which ultimately spanned several decades and several continents, as she dazzled people all over the world with her dancing, singing and artistic abilities. Micheline’s passion for ballet was paramount in her life. Her innate talent was exceptional. Her interpretation and articulation in movement was brilliant.  For this reason, she was nominated as one of the 10 best ballerinas in 1957.  Her career brought her in close contact with people like Evita Peron, Charlie Chaplin and Howard Hughes.

Cole Porter composed music and lyrics for Broadway and Hollywood alike. Porter's musical output was prolific during the late 1920s and 1930s. He averaged between one to three smashes almost every year between 1928 and 1939, some hits appearing in the same musical. While his Broadway career peaked in the 1930s, with the aberration of Kiss Me, Kate in 1948, Porter continued composing movie scores well into the late 1950s.

An exceptional letter melding two artistic worlds and two important talented artists.
