Porter Cole

Cole Porter autograph musical score, possibly from 1938 You Never Know

An untitled musical score on 1p partly printed Chappell music sheet written entirely in the hand of American songwriter and composer Cole Porter (1891-1964). Includes 40 measures of original music in multiple keys. Partial lyrics are pencil inscribed at top: "…mi-a, you've got to come + see me." Other musical notations include "Transition from Maria vocal to dance," and "f sempre, same movement in accompaniment," around measure 9; and "into Maria dance" at measure 40. With expected light paper folds and a minor rust paper clip impression verso, else near fine, the sheet measuring 9.25" x 12.5".

This autograph musical score is possibly from the 1938 Broadway musical comedy You Never Know. Based on the story "By Candlelight" by Siegfried Geiger and a script by Rowland Leigh, You Never Know featured music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The story concerns a Parisian maid named Maria who impersonates her mistress and falls in love with a valet posing as a baron. In the original cast, Mexican comedienne Lupe Velez (1908-1944) played Maria opposite American singer and dancer Clifton Webb (1889-1966). The musical ran for 78 performances at Broadway's Winter Garden Theater, between September-November 1938.

Cole Porter was a classically trained musician who composed music and lyrics for Broadway and Hollywood alike. Porter's musical output was prolific during the late 1920s and 1930s. He averaged between one to three smashes almost every year between 1928 and 1939, some hits appearing in the same musical. While his Broadway career peaked in the 1930s, with the aberration of Kiss Me, Kate in 1948, Porter continued composing movie scores well into the late 1950s.

A good friend of Porter's for decades, Webb worked mostly as a singer and dancer on Broadway in the 1920s and 30s before his film career blossomed in the forties in such Oscar-nominated movies as Laura (1944), The Razor's Edge (1946), and Sitting Pretty (1948). He won a Golden Globe Award in 1947 for his performance in The Razor's Edge.
