Description:

Elijah Clarke
Georgia, ca. November-December, 1785
Col. Elijah Clarke Lot of 5 MDS re: Georgia Land Bounty
MDS

A collection of five colonial land grant bounties authorized by Colonel Elijah Clarke, dated November thru December 1785. Measuring between 8.25" x 3" and 8" x 3.75". Signed throughout as "E. Clarke Colo." and addressed to the State of Georgia. These documents certify that the intended recipient is entitled to several hundred acres of land for service to the United States in accordance with an Act passed on August 20, 1781. With related docketing on verso of each, petitioning Clarke for the aforementioned land. Exhibits varying degrees of flattened folds and light to moderate toning. Areas of scattered staining and foxing present. Uneven edges to some. Signatures remain bold and legible.

Bounty land grants were awarded to Revolutionary War veterans to compensate them for the risks and hardships that they had endured during their service. Georgia was one of only nine states which had enough vacant land to offer for such grants. Each state that issued bounty land had a different formula for the awards, just as each state recognized a variety of soldiers.

Elijah Clarke (1742-1799) was an American military officer and Georgia legislator. He served in the Georgia Militia during the war, where he fought in the southern theater and served under Col. Andrew Pickens in the Battle of Kettle Creek. Clarke was later elected to the Georgia legislature, serving from 1781-1790.
