Clinton Impeachment Archive w/ Signed Letter, Ticket, Rehnquist TLS & Initialed Envelope - Fantastic Group!
Archive

Remarkable assemblage of items related to the Impeachment of Bill Clinton. The archive includes a Typed Letter Signed by Bill Clinton dated December 2, 1981, on Wright, Lindsey & Jennings law firm letterhead, addressed to Ms. Gloria Staggs. The letter features Clinton's signature in blue ink and discusses legal matters and financial timing related to a potential announcement regarding a run for Governor. It is accompanied by the original mailing envelope, postmarked December 3, 1981, which bears handwritten initials "BC" in what appears to be Clinton's own hand. Also included is an April 27, 1999 TLS from Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist on official U.S. Supreme Court "Chambers of the Chief Justice" letterhead. In this letter, Rehnquist thanks a correspondent for a historically themed submission from the New York Tribune. Completing this historically rich grouping is an original yellow United States Senate gallery admission ticket for the Impeachment Trial of President Bill Clinton, dated January 23, 1999, issued during the 106th Congress, First Session. This date was within the critical early days of the Senate trial, following the House of Representatives' vote to impeach Clinton on December 19, 1998. The group overall is in fine condition, expected folds on letters, the Rehnquist letter features evidence of prior mounting, the ticket, envelope and Clinton letter each showcase some toning. The Clinton letter measures 8.5" x 11", Rehnquist measures 8.5" x 10.5" the ticket measures 5.5" x 2.675".

The impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998 stemmed from charges of perjury and obstruction of justice related to his testimony during the investigation into his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The U.S. House of Representatives approved two articles of impeachment on December 19, 1998, leading to a historic Senate trial beginning in January 1999. As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist presided over the trial in the Senate chamber. Though his role was largely procedural and limited by precedent, Rehnquist maintained decorum and neutrality throughout the proceedings. On February 12, 1999, the Senate acquitted Clinton on both counts, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed for removal from office.
