Volume III with folding table; without binder's instruction leaf.  Bookplates of James Franck Bright, English historian and Master of University College, Oxford. Occasional marginal pencil notations. Scattered light foxing to text, light rubbing to spines, a few joints tender but sound.

First edition of Eden’s unrivalled three-volume economic analysis of late 18th-century England, the “basis of sociological analysis ever since” (PMM), with folding table and numerous charts. "State of the Poor is one of the classical works in the history of economics. Eden was led to embark on the subject by the high prices brought on by the war in 1793 and 1795, and the effect they had on the living conditions of the poorer classes."

The results of his research "were published in three volumes; the first contained a description of the condition of the labouring classes and an analysis of its causes; the other two the supporting facts...which can never cease to be of importance. More valuable even than these, however, is the method he adopted in obtaining and systemizing statistically the details of so diffuse a problem; it has since proved the basis of sociological investigation ever since. Perhaps the greatest tribute to Eden's achievement is that paid to him by Marx in Das Kapital...describing Eden as the only pupil of Adam Smith who achieved anything of any significance in the 18th century" (PMM 249).

"Altogether this is the grand storehouse of information respecting the labouring classes of England, and should have a prominent place in every library" (McCullouch, 285). Eden ranks "as one of the those immediate successors of Adam Smith who best developed the inductive branch of political economy." (Palgrave I: 679). Goldsmith 17107. Kress B3384. PMM 249.
