Description:

Gable Clark 1901 - 1960 Clark Gable writes a check to a Hollywood news agency, PSA/DNA slabbed

April 15, 1950 check #7580 from the Ventura and Sepulveda Branch of the Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, Sherman Oaks, California signed in black pen "Clark Gable", written out to the order of "Citizen-News, 1545 North Wilcox Avenue, Hollywood, California" in the amount of "7.20". Yellow check with "Clark Gable" letterhead and saw tooth edging along top, red stamped verso, and perforated as cashed. Graded by PSA/DNA as EX-MT 6 and contained within 12.375" x 5.5" slab.

In 1950, Clark Gable (1901-1960) had over 30 years of Hollywood success, but was becoming increasingly unhappy with what he considered the mediocre roles offered to him by MGM. The studio in turn regarded his salary as excessive. Studio head Louis B. Mayer was fired in 1951 amid slumping Hollywood film industry revenue and the rising popularity of television. Many MGM stars were fired or their contracts were not renewed, including Greer Garson and Judy Garland. In 1953, Gable refused to renew his contract and began to work independently. His first two films in this new situation were Soldier of Fortune and The Tall Men (both 1955), which were profitable although modest successes.
