Clara Barton, popularly known as the "American Nightingale" and the "Angel of the Battlefield", exhibited a tendency to care for others at a very early age. In young adulthood, she served as a school teacher in New Jersey, Georgia, and Canada. She was the first female clerk in the U.S. Patent Office to receive equal pay for equal work in 1855. Barton spearheaded nursing, fundraising, and supply collecting efforts in Washington, DC as soon as the Civil War broke out. Her dedication to injured soldiers during the conflict, and afterwards to the unclaimed war dead as director of the Office of Missing Soldiers, made her beloved among rank and file. She later become president of the American branch of the Red Cross, a charitable organization that helped survivors of war, epidemics, and natural disasters.
