Barton Clara

Clara Barton ALS: "I am getting to be almost as remarkable a traveller as T.R."

2pp ALS inscribed overall and signed by American nurse Clara Barton (1821-1912) as "Clara Barton" in the center of the second page. Written on cream blue-lined bifold paper in Oak Park, Illinois on May 15, 1910. In very good to near fine condition, with expected paper folds and overall light toning. A small closed tear along central fold. A few minor edge chips and isolated pin holes, each page measures 5" x 8."

88-year-old Clara Barton marvelled at her frenetic schedule: "I am getting to be almost as remarkable a traveller as T.R. I left home some weeks ago…and have scarcely been in the same place two days since and have attended clubs and receptions continually, with scarce a change to write a line." Barton assured her correspondent--probably the Secretary of an organization in which Barton was involved--that she would gladly attend the next meeting, despite the fact that all of her papers were currently inaccessible in a travel trunk!

Barton's letter emphasized her incredible mobility and mental acuity, just a little less than two years before her death. She compared her hectic travel schedule to that of former President Teddy Roosevelt's, who had mounted his Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition to eastern and central Africa in 1909, traveled to Western Europe and Scandinavia by way of Egypt, and was due to return to the United States in June 1910.

Barton also mentioned her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, which was her primary residence during the last fifteen years of her life. Her home was later converted into a National Park Service site, where visitors can tour Barton's bedroom as well as her Red Cross offices.

Clara Barton, popularly known as the "American Nightingale" and the "Angel of the Battlefield," exhibited a tendency to care for others at a very early age. In young adulthood, she served as a school teacher in New Jersey, Georgia, and Canada. She was the first female clerk in the U.S. Patent Office to receive equal pay for equal work in 1855. Barton spearheaded nursing, fundraising, and supply collecting efforts in Washington, DC as soon as the Civil War broke out. Her dedication to injured soldiers during the conflict, and afterwards to the unclaimed war dead as director of the Office of Missing Soldiers, made her beloved among rank and file. She later become president of the American branch of the Red Cross, a charitable organization that helped survivors of war, epidemics, and natural disasters.
